NASA and MyMoon have teamed up to blog about everything lunar. Art, literature, music, movies, science, and everything in between!
The Moon provides an exciting setting or central plot point for many films. There are some obvious genres, like adventure and science fiction, that could involve a journey to the Moon. On the other hand, some movies use the Moon as a backdrop: maybe not central to the story, but still an important component of the movie.
My favorite movie starring the Moon (and also my favorite in general) is 2001: A Space Odyssey. The visuals are always breathtaking to watch, especially watching the scenes with the spacecrafts approaching the Moon. The movie effectively captures some of the grandeur of space and the Moon.
What are some of your favorite movies involving the Moon or even space? If you need any ideas, I started a list of some movies that I could think of involving the Moon here. (Of course the list isn’t very complete; feel free to suggest some titles that I should put in there!)

The Moon ain't what it used to be. People gush about asteroids, Mars, Jovian moons, exoplanets...but it feels like if you bring up the Moon, you mostly just get either a blank or a 'meh'. When ...
Today is Astronomy Day, and one of the best ways to celebrate is by going out and doing some stargazing. And one of the best ways to get started with stargazing is to use the Moon as a guide and ...
The mission of the Kepler Project is to discover habitable planets orbiting other stars. However, many of these planets are light years away and unreachable by humans with our current technology. So ...
Sorry for the late post everyone, has been a very busy week. But as for the topic of the week, I plan on talking about the exploration of the Moon, mainly the history and the alll of the lunar ...
The recent meteor explosion over Chelyabinsk, Russia helped bring to light a very real problem. We do not have adequate ways to detect many of the damage causing asteroids impacting the ...
well....
apollo 13 (classic, one of the best moon movies out there for sure - essential watching for any aspiring space pioneer)
capricorn one (not really the moon, but you'll see)
the dish (about the moon landings, arms length, as it were)
... funny there really aren't as many as one might think there should be... the right stuff is one of my all time space-faves but it only goes up to the end of the mercury mission. Some of the astronauts featured in it would later go on to explore the moon and it is *the* iconic movie about the start of the space race and just what sort of men it took to get our collective dreams out to the edge of the Earth.... then beyond.
I liked Iron Sky which was an interesting twist on the history of the Nazis. Out of all the SciFi movies out there I still like Apollo 13 the most.
@Nick thats pretty awesome that MyMoon did an interview with Sam Bell. I just watched the interview. I'm curious about how MyMoon managed to contact him.
@Demarcus, do you mean the interview with Duncan Jones, the director of "Moon?"
