NASA and MyMoon have teamed up to blog about everything lunar. Art, literature, music, movies, science, and everything in between!
Today, NASA's GRAIL mission craft impacted on the Moon, ending a mission that revealed new detail on Moon gravity.
NASA image of the Sally K. Ride Impact Site.
The impact site, an unnamed mountain, was named the "Sally K. Ride Impact Site".
Sally Ride was a pioneer, a hero, and a big part the GRAIL mission.
To me, that name seems...clinical. Underwhelming. 'Impact Site'? It's a mountain! That sounds more like a missile testing site than a mountain named in honor of a space legend.
Mountains on the moon are known by "Mons ___". And this is an unnamed mountain.
So why not call it Mons Ride, or Mons Sally? That seems more majestic and appropriate than "Impact Site". She's a legend---so name the place like it! The Moon is a majestic and imaginative place, and the mountain's name is free, so go for it.
What do you think? Was "The Sally K. Ride Impact Site" a good way to name it, or would something else have been more fitting?
