NASA and MyMoon have teamed up to blog about everything lunar. Art, literature, music, movies, science, and everything in between!
From Apollo 11 to Apollo 13, from “Houston, we’ve had a problem” to “One small step for a man”, there were a lot of serious or dramatic moments during the Apollo missions.
What a lot of people don’t know, though, is that there were a lot of really funny moments, too.
/Facepalm.
So without further ado, here are some of the funniest moments from the Apollo missions on the Moon:
Golf
My roommate recently noted how cool it would be to play golf on the Moon. He was amazed to hear it’s already been done:
Singing on the Moon
Apollo 17, who had quite a bit of fun, livened things up with a round of singing. And dancing. And be sure not to skip the end!:
Twinkletoes
Spacesuits were pretty clumsy back in the day, and Jack Schmitt had his own embarrassing moment on Apollo 17. His series of mishaps led mission control to refer to him as “twinkletoes”:
Free Fallin’
Awkward faceplants and other tumbles were actually pretty common during Apollo. “Not this graceful, you will be, in 1/6 gravity.” -Yoda
And last but not least...:
---The NSFW Bonus Section!---
These ones are not for the kiddos! The Apollo missions were carried out by, well, adult males, and get enough men into the same environment and you know the kinds of things that can happen. Even on the Moon.
If the 'not-safe-for-work' is your thing, here’s a couple of adult-audience gems:
Commander John Young cussing out fruit (video): John Young, who doesn’t discover until the end of the tirade that the hot mike is on, shares a little exasperated TMI about what his fruit diet is doing to him, with plenty of southern-twanged F-bombs for the occasion.
Playboy on the Moon: Yes, there has already been nude imagery on the Moon. As a prank to the crew, the backup crew on Apollo 12 snuck a few Playboy images into the cuff checklist, and even onto the orbiting lunar module (couldn’t leave Dick Gordon out, right?). So for anyone aspiring to that first, sorry; you’ve been beat!
